AUTUMNAL EQUINOX
This year's "autumnal equinox" happens on Sept. 23rd at 0455 UT or 55 minutes past
midnight EDT. That's when the subsolar point (the place on Earth where the Sun shines
vertically downward) will cross our planet's equator moving from north to south. Day
and night are of approximately equal length on Sept 23, 2002. The equinox, which means
equal night, marks the beginning of both northern autumn and southern spring.
