Caspian Gull L. cachinnans

This typical 2nd winter Caspian Gull was photographed on 6 February 2000 at the VAM rubbish-dump near Wijster in the Netherlands. The pictures are unfortunately a bit overexposed. The mantlecolor is a bit darker in real life, as can be seen in the top picture, which features both an adult argentatus and argenteus-type Herring Gull in the background. Compare this bird to some other 2nd winter Caspian Gulls on this page.

Note the changing headshape when the bird is at rest and alert, the beady eye-expression, long neck, slender bill and the typical dark streaking on the hind-neck. In the two bottom pictures the white primary spot on the P10 is visible.
