Yellow-legged Gull L. michahellis

 Juvenile Yellow-legged Gull, Wijster, the Netherlands, 5th August 2000. The bird above and to the left are the same.

Note the big head, dark firm blunt-tipped bill, long legs and wings, and the pale underparts and head with a dark smudge around the eye. The scapulars, especially the lower ones, are already a bit worn. The large looking tertials are deep brown with a fine pale edge. The greater coverts are heavily marked with the inner ones more dark.

When alert YLG can show a flat crown not unlike Caspian Gull L. cachinnans. The same bird is depicted below.

 Note its 'firm' jizz, the minimal wing panel (P1-P3 being slightly paler), the evenly dark underwing coverts and the white upper tailcoverts with broad black tailband.
