Caspian Gull L. cachinnans

This 1st winter Caspian Gull was photographed on 27 November 1999 at the VAM rubbish-dump near Wijster in the Netherlands and is probably the same bird as in the top picture on this page.

 

 

 

 

As can be seen in the two pictures above the underwing of a Caspian Gull does not necessarily have to be completely white. It can show some dark edges to the coverts and some barring on the axillaries. Note also the obvious wingpanel in the picture on the right.
