Caspian Gull L. cachinnans

This very abraded 1st winter Caspian Gull was photographed on 27 November 1999 on the VAM rubbish-dump near Wijster in the Netherlands. It has very worn tailfeathers, primaries, tertials and wingcoverts. The scapulars are already 1st winter. Note the fresh 1st winter lesser coverts between the worn juvenile ones. Just why this bird is in this condition is a bit unclear to me. It could be a health problem or a bird of a very Southern origin.
