A bit about who I am:

Education & Employment

I attained a MSc from Leiden University (NL) and a PhD from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (NL) and have, since 2005, worked for 7 universities throughout the UK as a post-doctoral research assistant/associate/fellow, and Lecturer, most recently for Edinburgh, Newcastle, and Glasgow Universities.

Research Interests

My main research interests fall within the field of Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Robotics. I study and develop techniques for data analysis and intelligent, complex, and/or autonomous systems. I have developed and applied these techniques to solve a wide range of problems in numerous application areas, collaborating with researchers in various research fields.

Teaching Experience and Philosophy

I taught two bridging courses, and the Professional Skills and Issues course, to students of the Singapore Institute of Technology at the University of Glasgow. At Edinburgh Napier University I taught 4 courses on Software Engineering and AI, including a new course developed for the Computer Science curriculum. I have supervised at least 11 honours, MSc, and project students, as well as 2 PhD students, on subjects such as Software Engineering, AI, Distributed Computing, and Robotics. I get high satisfaction ratings in student surveys for both my teaching and supervision. My teaching philosophy is to always strive to establish an open, inclusive, and effective relationship with the students by having a clear and responsive delivery strategy of the study material.

Professional Esteem

I have collaborated on 3 large EU projects, three EPSRC projects, one AHRC-EPSRC-JISC project, and one (Finland) TEKES/FiDiPro project. I was a staff member on the EU Network of Excellence for Evolutionary Computing, for which I helped organise 2 summer schools. I have given or collaborated on at least 11 invited talks, media interviews, lectures series, or demonstrations, and have been on the programme committee or review board for at least 11 conferences, and 7 journals.

Research Output

Beside my MSc and PhD thesis, I have 44 publications : 4 journal articles, 2 chapters in books or collections, 27 papers in conference proceedings, and 11 contributions to workshops. 8 of these publications were in journals or conferences rated A or A* in the CORE ranking databases.
