TOR

(Telex over radio)

State of the art of about 1950

TOR had been invented by Mr van Duuren in the 1940s, in The Netherlands (Dutch PTT). It was designed as to counter data distortion in wireless communications. The normal 5 bit Baudot-signal had been converted into a 7 bits signal. Every character was transmitted back towards the transmission station, as to check for signal errors. Only after it was assured that the signal has been received correctly, the next telex symbol could be transmitted.
