Neil Dougall was the son of a joiner who went to sea with the navy and died in Ceylon when Neil was four years old. His mother remarried and he went to school until he was fifteen years old. He went to see as well but he was seriously wounded by a salute that was fired to celebrate Lord Howe's victory over the French in June 1794. He was blinded and his right arm was amputated above the elbow. His musical talent enabled him to become a popular teacher and he also ran a tavern and a boarding-house. He married in 1806 and he had four sons and six daughters. He wrote a hundred psalms and hymns, among them "Kilmarnock" (1831). In 1854 a volume named "Poems and Songs" was published. He died in 1862 in Greenock. |
