the landscape painter Vittorio Assendo was the son of Carlo Avondo (1807-1881), a lawyer and a law teacher at the University of Turin. His mother Giuseppina Isnard was a daughter of the surgeon Giuseppe Isnardi. He was taught painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti, in Geneva by Alexandre Calame and in France. In 1857 he was in Florence where he frequented the Caffè Michelangioli. His knowledge of medieval art earned him a position as a consultant for the Exhibition of the 500th anniversary of Dante at the Bargello Museum . He returned to Turin in 1861, where he participated in exhibitions of the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti. In 1863 he became a member of the commission that selected works for the Museo Civico. He 1866 he moved to Lozzolo to avoid a cholera epidemic. There he often depicted the area in his landscape paintings. In 1872 he bought the Issogne Castle in Valle d’Aosta. He restored it with the help of his friend Ernesto Pochintesta and others. He was also involved in the restoration of the medieval part of Turin. In 1887 he was elected into City Councilof Turin. Later he donated his residence at the via Napione 2 to the Piedmontese Society of Archeology and Fine Arts. In 1890 he succeeded Tapparelli d’Azeglio as director of the Museo Civico. He transferred the Issogne Castle to the state in 1907 and he died in Turin in 1910. Related persons • was pupil of Calame, Alexandre |
