John Allan was the owner of ships in both his native Whitby and London. After his death in 1865 he was buried at Nunhead Cemetery in London where the sculptor Matthew Noble based his tomb upon the Pavaya Mausoleum at Xanthos. Allan's son John Harrison Allan (1820-1882) was a shipowner as well and also a travel writer.
