Amero Cagnoni abandones his classical education to become the director of a spinning mill in Brianza. After that he worked as an secretary for a noble family from Asti. He enrolled at the Brera Academy in Milan where he studied from 1872 to 1879 under Giuseppe Bertini. His painting "La figlia di Curzio Pichena" ("The daughter of Curzio Pichena") was much appreciated and in 1881 the Lottery Commission of Milan bought his painting "Valentina". In the same year he won the Mylius prize with a portrait of the painter Mategna and many further portraits followed. He also painted landscapes and genres. In 1883 he won the Fumagalli Prize and in 1886 another Mylius Prize. In 1894 he successfully exhibited his painting "Sgradevole incidente" ("Unpleasant Accident") in Vienna. Together with Luigi Conconi (1852-1917) he also worked as a caricaturist for Il Guerin Meschino and for l' Illustrazione Italiana. He died in 1923 in Milan and was buried at the Cimitero Monumentale in that city. |
