Annie Fratellini came from an Italian family of circus artists. Her grandfather Paul Fratellini was one of three brothers who were famous circus clowns. At first Annie avoided the circus and she became a singer in music halls and nightclubs. But later sh ebecame the first female circus clown in France. She also founded the first circus school in the country and she performed in movies. In 1954 she married Pierre Granier-Deferre, in whose film "Metamorphose" she appeared. They had a daughter, Valerie, but they divorced. In 1969 she was in "The Great Love" and she married the director of that movie, Pierre Étaix. She died in 1997 at Neuilly-sur-Seine from cancer.
