Gusztáv Batthyány was the son of Count Antal Batthyány de Németújvár and his wife Mária Anna Festetics von Tolna. On 14 December 1828 he married married Baroness Wilhelmine von Ahrenfeld, the widow of Ferdinand, Graf Bubna von Littitz (1768-1825). At that time, they already had two sons. Wilhelmine died in 1840.

He emigrated to England where he bred racehorses. In 1848 he supported the Magyar national movement in Hungary. He was lected to the Jockey Club in 1859. In 1875 his horse Galopin won the Epson Derby. In 1870 his second Cousin Philipp died and he became the 5th Prince Batthyány-Strattmann. He retired from horse races in 1875 because of a heart condition. In 1883 he died after a heart attack that he suffered during a luncheon at the Jockey Club.
