Jan Veth was best known as a portrait painter and as an art critic. He was the son of the iron merchant and politician Gerrardus Huibert Veth from Dordrecht. His mother Anna Cornelia Giltay was a granddaughter of the painter Jacob van Strij (1756-1815).

In his youth he was taught painting by Johannes rutten. He was further educated at the Rijksakademie van Beelden in Amsterdam where August Allabé was his teacher from 1880 to 1885. In 1885 he left the Academy to join the older painter Anton Mauve in Laren. In 1887 he created the band design for his friend Frederik van Eeden's novel "De kleine Johannes". In the same year he started writing as an art critic for De Nieuwe Gids. On 10 August 1888 he married Anna Dorothea Dirks. They settled in Bussum had five children. His studio in Bussum was visited by many artists.

In 1894 he published "Kunst en Samenleving" ("Art and Society"), which was based on Walter Crane'"Claims of Decorative Arts". Between 1894 and 1896 he was the teacher of the painter Nelly Bodenheim and he worked as a lecturer at the Rijksakademie. From 1896 to 1915 he frequently visited Berlin to paint portraits.

In 1918 he was a founding member of the Vereniging Hendrick de Keyser, that aimed at preserving architecturally and historically important buildings. In 1923 he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1924 he moved to Amsterdam and failing health forced him to retire from teaching. He died in 1925 in Amsterdam.
