Rose Chéri came from a family of actors and singers. Her sister was the actress Anna Chéri and her brother was the composer Victor Chéri. She entered the stage when she was four years old. After she came to the attention of the composer Loisa Puget in 1841 she was engaged at the Théâtre du Gymnase in Paris in 1842. Théophile Gautier considered her to be a rare talent. In 1847 she married the director of the theatre, Adolphe Lemoine who was known as Montigny. After that she was called Chéri Montigny.

She refused offers from the Comédie-Française and remained at the Théâtre du Gymnase where Anna and Victor were employed as well. In 1851 Alfred de Musses was lyrical about her role as Clarisse Harlowe and he went to see her 30 times. He wrote "Bettine" (1851) for her which was no great success. But she altered prematurely and this restricted her in the parts she could play.

In 1861 she nursed her eldest son Joseph who suffered from diphtheria. He recovered, buy she died from the illness herself on 22 September 1861. In 1878 Joseph was bitten by a rabid dog when he left a theatre and he died a month afterwards.
