Alexander Roda Roda's real name was Sandór Rosenfeld. He was in the Austrian army from 1892 until 1902, when he was forced to leave after he had made fun of it in the magazine Simplicissimus. In 1900 he had a liaison with actress Adele Sandrock, who was nine years his senior. They wanted to marry, but their affair ended in September 1901.

He started a career as an author, writing plays and stories. In 1904 he moved to Berlin, where he was successful as a cabaret author and artist. His popular piece "Der Feldherrnhügel" was immediately forbidden in Austria in 1910.

During the First World War he lived in Munich, Paris and Berlin. When the nazis came to power in 1933 he moved back to Austria. In 1938 he left for Switzerland and in 1940 he went to the United States, where he died in New York in 1945.
