Daughter of the Dutch actress Nans ter Hagen and a German merchant. From 1888 to 1895 she worked at the Deutsche Volkstheater in Vienna, where she played mostly in modern French parts. She had a stormy love affair with young Arthur Schnitzler in the early nineties and other lovers were Alexander Roda Roda and Max Burkhard.

From 1895 to 1898 she was employed at the Burgtheater in Vienna, but after a conflict with the management she quit and restricted herself to guest performances at other locations. From 1898 onwards she lived in Berlin and in 1906 she worked for a while at the Deutsches Theater of Max Reinhardt. After a period of financial troubles she made a come back in the silent movies (1911-1934). From 1930 to 1936 she also played in movies with sound. In 1940 her memoirs 'Ihr Leben' were published.

29/5/1905Private performance in Vienna of Frank Wedekind's "Die Büchse der Pandora". The play was first performed at 1 Feb 1904 at the Intimen Theater in Nürnberg, but banned by the German censors afterwards. Karl Kraus organised a private performance at the Trianon Theatre in Vienna. Tilly Newes played Lulu and Albert Heine played Schigolg and was the director. Adele Sandrock had the part of Gräfin Geschwitz, Ida Orloff was Kadidja di Santa Croce and Karl Kraus was Kungu Pote.
