Adam Albrecht was best known for his paintings of battles and horses. He started his education as a confectioner in Nuremberg in 1803 but soon turned to painting. In 1807 in Munch he met the female painters Margarethe Geiger and Sophie Reinhard and the three of them went to Vienna in 1808. In Vienna he visited the academy, but he also witnessed the battles of Aspern and Wagram in 1809. In Vienna he attracted the attention of Eugène de Beauharnais, whose court painter he became. He joined Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812 as a war painter. He returned to Munich in dangerous circumstances in December, 1812 and left for Italy where he stayed until 1815. After his return to Munich in 1815 he settled there and worked for the monarchs of Austria and Bavaria. In his later years he was assisted by his sons Benno, Eugen and Franz.
