Vilma Degischer studied ballet with Grete Gross, Gertrude Bodenwiser and Ellinor Tordis. At a certain moment she decided she wanted to be an actress instead of a dancer and she attented the Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna.

She debuted in Berlin in 1930 as Hernia in "Midsummernight's Dream" by Shakespeare. Max Reinhardt was the director. In 1939 she joined the company of the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna. During the same year she married actor Hugo Thimig, who was twenty years her senior. They had two daughters.

During the forties she also appeared in musicals and other movies. She was archduchess Sophie in the Sissi films by Ernst Marischka (1955-1957). She also appeared in mini series on television, like "The Strauss Dynasty" (1991).
