Carl Woermann was the largest private shipowner in the world. He came from a family of linen manufactures and founded his own trading company in 1837. In 1847 he bought his first ship and more ships foloowed. He founded a trading office in Liberia in 1854. His company suffered losses during the depression of 1857, but by 1859 he was the owner of eight ships. In 1862 a branch in Gabon was opened and a branch in Cameroon in 1868. From 1859 to 1868 he was a member of parliament in Hamburg. His eldest son Carl wasn't interested in the company and became an art historian. His second son Adolph Woermann joined the company as a partner instead. He took over the company after Carl's death in 1880. His daughter Marie Woermann was a painter. Family • Son: Woermann, Karl |
