Felice Baciocchi was born into a poor noble family. He joined the French army and in 1788 he was promoted to lieutenant. In 1797 he married Napoleon Bonaparte's younger sister Élisa in Marseille. In 1800 he became Ambassador to the Spanish Court and moved to Madrid, leaving his wife in France. In 1802 he was promoted to colonel, in 18540 to brigadier general and in 1809 to major general. In 1804 he became a senator and in 1805 an imperial prince. Napoleon gave him the title of Prince of Lucca, but the sovereign power was given to Élise. She had affairs with other men that were tolerated by Baciocchi.

Baciocchi was an enthousiastic violinist and he studied with Pagani for ten years during the times he resided in Lucca and Florence. After the fall of Napoleon he first retired to Trieste and then to Bologna after Élisa's death in 1820. He lived in Bologna until his own death in 1841.
