BIRTH NAME Matta Echauren, Roberto Sebastian Antonio

Educated at the College of the Sacred Heart and at the Catholic University, both in Santiago. He moved to Paris in 1936 an worked as an architect for Le Corbusier and Gropius. He met Dali and Breton and the latter bought some of his drawings. In 1938 he joined the surrealist movement and he participated in the International Surrealist Exhibition in Paris.

In 1940 he went to New York and he worked together with Max Ernst and Peggy Guggenheim's Art of the Century gallery. He alsso worked with his friends Pollock and Gorky. In 1948 he left the American Surrealists and returned to Europe.
