Instants in space time are rarely exclusively accessible by one path only. Many of the instants reached were outside of the scope of awareness in preceding places and times inside linear time until mankind arrived at them. I believe it to be a self inflicted restriction to structurally denounce what is outside that scope (realizing well that escaping conditioning is probably the greatest challenge man faces). Science has proven its own perceptions to be erroneous or incomplete throughout history. While official science had for centuries been unable to even detect mono atomic elements by using traditional methods like electroscopy, neutron activation or chemical analysis, the Russian Institute of Science appeared to have been using techniques described in ancient alchemist books to successfully create exotic matter before anyone else did in this modern age. The Russians basically re-discovered and applied ancient knowledge that was rejected by ‘officially approved, self appointed’ science until it was no longer able to capable of ignoring the significance of the findings of the Russian scientists. It reflects a traditional habit of err that is the result of global conditioning that has been imposed on the world for many centuries.

The caution expressed by science to not become involved with groups that use methods different from those accepted by science to explore phenomenons of life, is reversely also expressed by the groups referred to by science. Isaac Newton when not working in the science lab, was a dedicated alchemist. He urged his friend Robert Boyle to keep ‘high silence’ in discussing the alchemist principles in public, fearing that immense damage would because when that knowledge would become generally used. Since Newton was familiar with both worlds, he should perhaps been given some measure of credit for his opinion in this matter.

In November of 2007 CERN’s Large Hadron Collider will be fired up. What scientists will basically attempt to achieve, is to come as close as possible to the instant of the singularity that caused space time to come to existence. None of them has an idea what they will encounter in the process. Perhaps the answer to questions concerning singularity will be answered. I dread to think of possible other unforeseen consequences their research may have.

Bob, like Kurzweil, I believe the internet is crucial in accelerating change.

I'm a researcher myself, and I know faster about research results of my colleagues than I did before. This is all thanks to internet. Open access, and pure electronic journals, will only facilitate this process more.

There comes a point though where access to reviewed research is as fast as it can be (due to the fact that review takes time). However, by that time there will probably be better tools, and also more researchers to allow for further accelaration.

Jeroen: you are right about Kurzweil's definition being different. The definition used at the Singularity Summit was mostly this of Rodney Brooks of MIT: ‘Singularity is the technical creation of smarter than human intelligence’. Indeed, maybe Kurzweil is more accurate because he takes into consideration that, when people and technology slowly merge and thus people become more intelligent, it will be hard to tell human intelligence apart from technical created intelligence.
Jeroen: according to you, what role plays the internet in the accelerating change?

Coming back to my earlier post (where I stated that the Singularity is the moment that the rate of innovation goes to infinity), I think that Kurzweils definition of Singularity is also much more interesting and indeed will be reached earlier.

Even if a machines intelligence will eclipse humans, that still does not mean that they will be "smarter". The problem with "smart" computers is not intelligence, but common sense. Researchers have been trying for decades to teach computers common sense, but so far have not succeeded.

Also: what is intelligence? I've studied Cognitive Artificial Intelligence, and I have no clue how to define intelligence. Let alone judge that a computer is more intelligent than me.

That's just it: If extraterrestrial intelligence would be capable of showing itself to us, in open and loud ways, it is fair to assume they will have evolved in a lifetime duration very near to our own one, exactly because of technological singularity being so near for us as a species and planet.
Because most of us aren't convinced about intelligent life from outside of our solar system, it is very logical to assume we are and will be very much alone in evolving this far, reaching the singularity-level is too limited a chance and too lucky for it to ever occur. By the time that we will get closer, it is also quite possible we will be struck by cosmic disaster. If not, why aren't we seeing the other post-singularity beings (by the hundreds, at least)?

The instant of matching and surpassing human intelligence will precede reaching a singular state of matter and energy by a long time. The intelligent part of humanity uses about 10% of its brain, its left brain hemisphere predominantly, while the right hemisphere is barely used.

We are basically sitting on a goldmine, but have no clue that we do. Some individuals of a very small circle are aware of it, but prefer to keep the knowledge to themselves. While computing machines use binary logic, the human brain uses a structure of three way switches for the process of reasoning, which potentially increases the power of thought dramatically. Efficient and systematic poisoning of the human physique and mind have prevented most from allowing themselves to deploy the entire capacity of their brain.

It is assumed extraterrestrial intelligence is interested in the human life form because of its unique genetic structure, which quite obviously is for a specific reason. Conditioned, binary logic does not do the trick, as many quantum physicists have already discovered; exotic matter behaves in ways that we are unable to predict and understand by using the type of logic that we have become accustomed to and limited by.

The gateway to super intelligence will not be opened by exclusively relying on electro mechanical science. It has to be combined with a new form of bio-engineering. Mankind should use the free gift of nature to expand its intelligence.

The moment when their intelligence will exceed that of people, is called Singularity.
