Last Tuesday, the Upper House of the Dutch Parliament passed the Telecommunications Data Retention Act, a law which XS4ALL has opposed for many years. In response, we have today taken space in the national newspapers to publish an e-mail from XS4ALL Director Theo de Vries:

Dear Internet User,
Two days ago the Telecommunications Data Retention Act was passed – to our great regret – by the Upper House of the Dutch Parliament. All information concerning your e-mails, internet browsing and telephone calls must now be stored for one year. In other words, including the data relating to this mail.
We have opposed this law for many years, because we consider it ridiculous that the government wants to monitor everyone in this way. The infringement of your and my privacy as a result of this measure is completely disproportionate to its necessity and benefits.
As we are now compelled to retain the internet data of all our customers, we shall of course do so with the greatest possible care.
Should the authorities wish to inspect your data, we shall naturally take a very critical stance. Security and protection of your personal data is and will remain one of our utmost priorities.
Yours truly,
Theo de Vries
Director
