Joseph Schaitberger was the son of a miner. After his father died in 1679 he inherited his house. He married Magdalena Khämbl in 1683 and had two daughters by her in 1684 and 1685. He received friends and neighbours, with whom he prayed and sang. He was arrested for this early in 1685 and imprisoned in Salzburg. His wife and children were taken away from him and he was forced to leave the country.

Together with other miners he moved to Germany and he settled in Nürnberg, where he worked as a wire drawer. Magdalena had gone with him but she died within a year. In 1693 he married Catherine
Brockenberger, who was also in exile in Nürnberg. Schaitberger started writing protestant tracts and they were bundled into the book "The Sendbrief". It became very popular among Protestants and it was detected in Catholic Austria it was burned. Schaitberger lived until his death in Nürnberg.
